How Much Does Radiator Replacement Cost?

Updated October 2026 By RepairCostLab Editorial Team

Expect to pay $315 to $980 at an independent shop for a typical car, and up to $1,190 at a dealership. Plastic radiator tanks crack with age, causing leaks and overheating. Replacement is a mid-priced repair on most cars.

What does it do?

The radiator sheds engine heat into the air passing through the grille, cooling the coolant before it returns to the engine.

Signs you need this repair

Can you do it yourself?

Difficulty: Intermediate (3/5). Drain coolant, disconnect hoses and fan, unbolt. Bleeding air from the cooling system afterwards is the tricky part.

Doing it yourself saves the labor portion, roughly $165–$480, so you would pay only for parts ($150–$500).

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. Overheating causes the most expensive engine damage there is. Aftermarket radiators keep this repair affordable even on older cars.

How to save money

Questions to ask your mechanic

  1. Is the leak from the radiator itself, or from a hose or the water pump?
  2. Should the thermostat and hoses be replaced while the coolant is drained?
  3. Is the replacement radiator aluminum and plastic, and what warranty does it carry?

Asking for a written, itemized estimate (parts, labor hours and hourly rate) is your right in most states and makes quotes easy to compare.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a radiator last?

Typically 8 to 10 years or 100,000+ miles.

Can a leaking radiator be repaired?

Small leaks can sometimes be sealed temporarily, but cracked plastic tanks generally require replacement.

What happens if I keep driving while overheating?

You risk a blown head gasket or warped cylinder head, which costs far more than a radiator.
