How Much Does Alternator Replacement Cost?

Updated October 2026 By RepairCostLab Editorial Team

Expect to pay $290 to $850 at an independent shop for a typical car, and up to $1,025 at a dealership. A failing alternator leaves you with a dead battery and, eventually, a car that will not start. The good news: on most cars the swap is a bolt-on job that takes a shop one to two hours.

What does it do?

The alternator is a belt-driven generator. While the engine runs it recharges the battery and powers lights, the infotainment system, fans and every computer in the car.

Signs you need this repair

Can you do it yourself?

Difficulty: Moderate (2/5). Usually just the serpentine belt, one electrical connector and two or three bolts. Some V6 and transverse engines bury it under the intake, which pushes labor past 2.5 hours.

Doing it yourself saves the labor portion, roughly $110–$400, so you would pay only for parts ($180–$450).

Is it worth fixing?

Almost always. The car cannot run for long without a working alternator, and the repair rarely exceeds the value of even an older car. On a vehicle worth under $1,500, a remanufactured unit keeps the bill low.

How to save money

Questions to ask your mechanic

  1. Did you test the battery and charging system, or only the alternator?
  2. Is the replacement new, remanufactured or used, and what is the warranty?
  3. Does the serpentine belt or tensioner also need replacing while you are in there?

Asking for a written, itemized estimate (parts, labor hours and hourly rate) is your right in most states and makes quotes easy to compare.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a bad alternator?

Only briefly. The car runs on battery power alone, which typically lasts 30 minutes to an hour before the engine dies.

How long does an alternator last?

Most last 80,000 to 150,000 miles, or roughly 7 to 10 years.

Is it the battery or the alternator?

If a jump start gets the car running but it dies again soon after, suspect the alternator. If it will not crank at all but runs fine once jumped, suspect the battery.
