Bad CV Axle Symptoms: Clicking When Turning and More

Updated October 2026 By RepairCostLab Editorial Team
Quick answer

The classic sign of a bad CV axle is a clicking or popping noise when turning sharply, such as in a parking lot. Other signs are grease splattered inside the wheel from a torn boot, vibration when accelerating, and a clunk when shifting into drive. Most shops replace the complete axle shaft.

Common symptoms

How to confirm it

In an empty parking lot, turn the wheel fully to one side and drive slowly in a circle, then repeat the other way. A rhythmic clicking that speeds up with the car points to the outer CV joint on the side opposite the turn direction, which carries more load. Then look behind each front wheel for a torn rubber boot or grease spray.

Torn boot: fix it early

The CV joint itself usually fails because its rubber boot tore, letting grease out and dirt and water in. If you catch a torn boot before the joint starts clicking, replacing just the boot and repacking the joint is an option. Once the joint clicks, it is already worn and most shops replace the whole axle, which is often quicker and similar in cost.

How urgent is it?

A clicking CV joint can keep working for weeks or months, but it will get worse. If the joint breaks completely, the car loses drive to that wheel and will not move. Vibration under acceleration or loud clunks call for quicker action.

Frequently asked questions

How long do CV axles last?

Often 70,000 to 130,000 miles, as long as the boots stay intact.

Do I need to replace both CV axles?

No, only the worn one, unless both boots are torn.

Are aftermarket CV axles good?

Quality aftermarket axles work well for most cars. Some trucks and AWD vehicles are better served by OEM axles.
