How Much Does Brake Pad Replacement Cost?

Updated October 2026 By RepairCostLab Editorial Team

Expect to pay $150 to $360 at an independent shop for a typical car, and up to $465 at a dealership. Brake pads are the most common wear item on any car. Replacing them on one axle is a quick, affordable job if you catch it before the pads grind into the rotors.

What does it do?

Pads are friction blocks that the caliper squeezes against the rotor to slow the wheel. They wear down a little every time you brake.

Signs you need this repair

Can you do it yourself?

Difficulty: Moderate (2/5). A classic first DIY job: lift the car, remove the caliper, swap pads, compress the piston. Cars with electronic parking brakes need a scan tool for the rear axle.

Doing it yourself saves the labor portion, roughly $110–$240, so you would pay only for parts ($40–$120).

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. Brakes are safety-critical, and pads are among the cheapest repairs you can make. Doing them on time is also what keeps you from paying for rotors.

How to save money

Questions to ask your mechanic

  1. How many millimeters of pad are left on each axle?
  2. Can my rotors be reused or resurfaced?
  3. What pad type are you installing: ceramic or semi-metallic, and which brand?

Asking for a written, itemized estimate (parts, labor hours and hourly rate) is your right in most states and makes quotes easy to compare.

Frequently asked questions

How often should brake pads be replaced?

Typically every 30,000 to 70,000 miles, depending on driving style and pad type. City driving wears them faster.

Do I need new rotors with new pads?

Not always. If the rotors are above minimum thickness and not warped or deeply grooved, they can be reused or resurfaced.

Is the price per wheel or per axle?

Brake jobs are quoted per axle (both front wheels, or both rear wheels). Pads are always replaced in axle pairs.
