How Much Does Brake Line Replacement Cost?

Updated October 2026 By RepairCostLab Editorial Team

Expect to pay $140 to $630 at an independent shop for a typical car, and up to $840 at a dealership. Rusted or leaking brake lines are common in road-salt states and are a serious safety issue: a burst line can leave you with almost no braking.

What does it do?

Steel brake lines carry pressurized brake fluid from the master cylinder to each wheel. Flexible rubber hoses connect the lines to the calipers.

Signs you need this repair

Can you do it yourself?

Difficulty: Hard (4/5). Requires bending and flaring new lines and bleeding the brakes correctly. Mistakes are dangerous.

Doing it yourself saves the labor portion, roughly $110–$480, so you would pay only for parts ($30–$150).

Is it worth fixing?

Always. A failing brake line is a safety emergency, regardless of the car's value.

How to save money

Questions to ask your mechanic

  1. Which lines are leaking, and how many need replacing?
  2. Are you using pre-bent lines or bending them on site?
  3. Will the full system be bled with fresh fluid?

Asking for a written, itemized estimate (parts, labor hours and hourly rate) is your right in most states and makes quotes easy to compare.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a leaking brake line?

No. Have the car towed. A leaking line can fail completely without warning.

Why are rust-belt quotes higher?

Rusted fittings often break during removal, which turns a single line into several.

Copper-nickel or steel lines?

Copper-nickel lines resist corrosion much better and are easier to bend, at a slightly higher parts cost.
